I’ve been following this fella Kurly Hypa for more than a hot minute now and I think he’s done enough to warrant me writing him a little piece. Although I’m living in Florida at the moment and London’s my town, I go to uni in Leicester so I frequent and follow the underground scene up there a lot. Kurly Hypa is always on the bill, usually hyping the Beastwang nights (which I covered here a while ago), and I like his style. It’s grime, but I can’t help noticing a little hip-hop edge (maybe its the closer-to-140 tendency), and I like that subtlety a lot “Get to know out here on the Leicester roads I’m not another fuckboy with a Skepta flow.” – Too true there’s too many of them man there.
Anyway, he’s just dropped a little EP on soundcloud with a few collabs with some other new faces, and I strongly advise you check it out. If Big Narstie is right the midlands scene is gonna blow up soon, so I’m jotting down names of a few fellas that are showing potential. Kurly Hypa joins the legion of new-wave grime artists such as Novelist who are multitalented in that they produce a lot of their tracks as well as spitting on them. And the production values are live on the EP, especially those on ‘And Again’ with the old school grimy flows reminiscent of the early days of Dizzee, and and ‘What Rudeboy’ which has a dirty dubstep backing that adds to the tenebrous feel of the track.

Have a listen and let me know what you think.
Peace
